Over time a fringing coral reef surrounded the
Island, providing a sheltered home for a variety
of fish and coral species. Fitzroy is an Island
riddled with beauty and history, and is an
exceptional way to visit both a national park
and magnificent reef. |

Interesting
History
-
“Gabar” was actually the first name given to
Fitzroy Island some many years ago by the
Aboriginal people.
-
In 1770, Captain Cook renamed the island
“Fitzroy”.
-
In the late 1800’s during the “Gold Rush”,
Fitzroy Island was classed as a quarantine
station for those persons with infectious
disease.
-
The first lighthouse was placed on Little
Fitzroy Island in 1929 after many ships were
wrecked on the reefs near Fitzroy.
-
Fitzroy Island
was involved in World War II, as the RAAF
No. 28 radar station was based on the
island. Debris from this time still remains
on both Fitzroy and Little Fitzroy islands.

In 1943 a lighthouse was built on Fitzroy
providing a safe passage to passing ships.
-
A developmental lease on Fitzroy Island was
first acquired in 1968; no development
eventuated until 1979.
