Boarding The Ghan in Adelaide or Darwin, you’ll experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. Marvel at the spectacular Australian landscapes; from the rusty reds of the MacDonnell Ranges surrounding a town called Alice, gateway to Ayers Rock and the Red Centre, then north to Tennant Creek, Katherine and the tropical splendor of Darwin.

And with the new blockbuster movie “Australia” that has recently hit theaters, this is the perfect way to journey to the Top End and see the film’s scenes come to life as the commanding landscape rolls by right in front of you. Follow in the footsteps of the movie with an 'Australia – the Safari' journey that provides an insightful array of landscapes, adventure, and unique Australian experiences. See "Useful Links" for a full itinerary.

The Indian Pacific is an epic journey that spans the continent of Australia and is one of the longest and greatest rail journeys on earth. It is an ocean to ocean adventure in a comfortable three day journey. Travel on the Indian Pacific from the Pacific Ocean in the East to the Indian Ocean in the West. This epic 2,704 mile trip provides a spectacular array of backdrops including the breathtaking Blue Mountains, the Great Dividing Range, the salt lakes and sand dunes of South Australia, the barren Nullarbor Plains and the Darling Ranges.

Get up close and see the sights of some of Australia's most famous outback towns when you enjoy an optional off-train sightseeing tour. The great train offers these tours during scheduled stops at Broken Hill, Adelaide and gold rich Kalgoorlie. A remote outpost on the Nullarbor Plain called Cook presents a further opportunity to stretch your legs.

All along the Indian Pacific route, keep an eye out for a sighting of the magnificent Australian wedge tailed eagle, the symbol of this great train. Its massive wingspan of up to two meters will make it easy to spot in a clear desert sky.

These great trains offer accommodation options to suit all budgets.

The journey's added length has enhanced The Ghan's already legendary appeal. Over two days, guests experience the dewy hillsides of the south, the dusty burnt rouges of the red centre, and the breezy northern tropics. Desert Park nature discovery and Katherine Gorge experience tours are among the indigenous cultural experiences offered en route. The harsh and unforgiving terrain brings excitement and the opportunity to discover the heart of this dry yet intriguing island continent.

Platinum Service on The Ghan offers the ultimate rail experience, luxury furnishings, full en suite and choice of double or twin bedding. Gold Service offers a comfortable Twin or Single berth Cabin, all meals are included in the Gold and Platinum Service fare and are served in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant. Alternatively, Red Service offers Day/Nighter Seating which is in comfortable two abreast recliner arm chairs with footrest and generous leg room. Food and beverages are available for purchase from the Red Service Diner.

Whichever way you choose to travel, these train journeys will undoubtedly create historic moments that will never cease to amaze, and the beauty of the ever-changing, dramatic Australian landscapes will be forever filed away as one of life's most incredible, breathtaking experiences.
