Day 3 Cape Peninsula tour
This morning after breakfast you will be met by your driver/guide, for departure on a full day Cape Peninsula Tour. Travel along the Atlantic Seaboard, to Hout Bay. From Hout Bay, travel to Noordhoek and through Ou Kaapse Weg.
Proceed to the Cape Point Nature Reserve, where you are able to ride the Funicular (for your own account) to the viewpoint where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. The Cape Peninsula is the thin finger of land in the southwestern most corner of Africa with the city of Cape Town at its head. As you travel south towards Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, the land gets narrower until the great Indian and Atlantic Oceans combine into one vast southern ocean, with nothing beyond except Antarctica. In 1578 Sir Francis Drake described it as ‘The fairest cape in the whole circumference of the globe,’ and it still is.
The Peninsula can be divided into the Atlantic coast on the west (including the City of Cape Town) and the False Bay coast on the east. With nothing but water all around the peninsula, the weather can be a little unpredictable and the wind can whip itself up into a fury. Luckily when it is howling on one side it is normally quiet on the other, so you can always find a sheltered spot.
On leaving the Nature Reserve, proceed to Simonstown, where you stop for lunch (for your own account), as well as a short stop at Boulders Beach. Nestled in historic Simon's Town in South Africa, Boulders Penguin Colony is part of the Cape Peninsula National Park. Almost 3000 African (jackass) penguins, so called because their call resembles the bray of a donkey, reign supreme amidst rounded rocks and fish-filled False Bay. These endangered, flightless birds are free to roam the seas and return to their private haven - Foxy Beach at Boulders.
Day 4 Winelands tour
Today you will be met at the lobby of your hotel by our representative who will take you on your full day scheduled tour of the Winelands. Enjoy a whole day dedicated to the indulgence and splendor of Africa's premier wine region. Travel through the Helshoogte Mountain Pass, and enjoy a visit to the Huguenot Monument in Franschhoek, as well as a stop at the Taal Monument in Paarl where you can take in the fabulous vistas. Why not take a stroll through the stunning university town of Stellenbosch. Your tour includes wine tasting at two estates. You will stop for lunch en route (for your own account).
Day 5 At lesiure, Cape Town
South Africa's ‘Mother City’ is indescribably beautiful, steeped in fascinating history and pulsating to a heady African rhythm. Indeed, few urban centers anywhere can match its setting along the mountainous Cape Peninsula spine, which slides into the Atlantic Ocean. A ride in a cable car to the top of Table Mountain, a ferry journey to Robben Island, or a meandering tour through the Winelands will leave you in no doubt that this place is an absolute highlight on any vacation to Africa. South Africa boasts incredibly good weather, gorgeous scenery and fantastic beaches and is one of the most diverse and enchanting countries in the world. Exotic combinations of landscapes, people, history and culture offer visitors a unique and inspiring experience. Enjoy your day at leisure in Cape Town.
Day 6 Cape Town to Sabi Sands (via Johannesburg)
Fly from Cape Town to Johannesburg. On arrival at Johannesburg Airport, make your way to the Bateleur Air Charters kiosk where you will be assisted to the Bateleur Air Charters VIP Lounge. The kiosk is located in the bus terminus behind the Intercontinental Hotel. Fly on board a scheduled shuttle aircraft to the airstrip in the Kruger National Park area. Please note that depending on the number of passengers, this flight may stop at lodges on the way.
On arrival at the Skukuz Airstrip, you will be met by a Lion Sands ranger, who will transfer you to the lodge. The road transfer is approximately 25 minutes.
Day 7 Day of Activities at Lion Sands
Spend the day enjoying the activities offered at Lion Sands Game Reserve.
Astronomy - This is done during the evening game drive and is kept as a surprise for those guests who have a keen interest in our solar system and the associated African folklore. Lie back under the African sky & be taken on a journey through our ancient galaxy.
Bush Walk - Prior to departing the ranger will assess the guest's fitness level and will structure the walk accordingly. During the summer months the walks are done in the early mornings and form part of the morning game drive. In winter the walk is done after breakfast but to ensure the best walking areas are accessed, the guest will leave the lodge in a Land Rover until the optimal walking route is reached. Once everyone (maximum 8 guests) has settled into the walk the ranger will start to talk on a wide variety of subjects ranging from the medicinal uses of certain plants to the basic skills of tracking animals. On returning to the vehicle light refreshments are served. This is a highly recommended activity in both summer and winter.
Game Drive - Guests are taken on early morning and evening open land rover game drives.
Hippo Tour - Often the guests do not get the chance to see the hippopotamus during either their morning and evening game drive as the Land Rover's traverse the interior of the reserve, focusing on the inland animals. This tour offers the guest a chance to observe this amazing creature in its natural habitat. There is also a good chance of seeing the enormous African Nile crocodiles (12-14ft), which inhabit the Sabie River.
Safari Lunch - Guests can request for a picnic lunch at either one of the River hides or Waterhole hide. This activity is only offered during the winter, dry season months, as this is the time when wildlife are seen to congregate around these points.
Wildlife Lectures – These lectures cover a variety of wildlife subjects. Our Senior Ecologist and Head Ranger will ensure that the subject content is not only interesting but very site specific. The lectures will take place every alternate day. The venue, content and spokesperson details will be available at reception desk.
Day 8 A Typical Day on Safari
Your day will typically start with an early rise. Enjoy a light snack before departing on an activity, with a stop for a snack and tea/coffee en route. Upon return to camp (normally about three hours later), you enjoy a sizeable brunch. Free time is them ample during the heat of the day, so why not enjoy a siesta, or a dip in the pool. Mid-afternoon, tea, cakes and savories are served, before you depart on your afternoon activity, with a stop for cocktails en route. You will return to camp where you will enjoy a sumptuous dinner before retiring.
Day 9 Sabi Sands to Johannesburg
Today you will be transferred by a Lion Sands game ranger to Skukuza Airstrip for your departure flight. The transfer time is approximately 25 minutes. Then, fly on board a scheduled shuttle aircraft to Johannesburg Airport. Please note that depending on the number of passengers, this flight may stop at lodges on the way.
Fly Johannesburg to USA
Overnight on board South African Airways back to the States. Please note that airfare is not included in the package price – call for best available airfare to complete your itinerary.
