Day-By-Day Itinerary
This itinerary can be fully customized; to tailor this package to your specific requirements please call one of our travel specialists at 1-800-22-SWAIN.Day 1 Fly USA to Brisbane
Day 2 Cross The International Dateline
Day 3 Arrive Brisbane
Upon arrival you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to Holt Street Jetty to board your launch to Moreton Island.
Moreton Island
North of Stradbroke, Moreton Island is a natural wonderland teeming with miles of sandy beaches, freshwater lagoons, rampant wildflowers and prolific birdlife. There is also evidence of the island’s rich history from the ancient shell middens of early Aboriginal settlers to the fortifications leftover from military occupation in 1938. The island was also the site of Queensland’s first and only whaling station, which operated between 1952 and 1962.
Apart from a few rocky headlands, it’s all sand and approximately 95% of the island is national park. Mt Tempest, the highest coastal sand hill in the world, is well worth a trek up. At the northern tip is the Cape Moreton Lighthouse. Built in 1857, it’s the oldest operating lighthouse in Queensland, and is the place to come for an impressive 360-degree view of the island.
Day 4 At leisure, Moreton Island
The island resort is just 75 minutes from Brisbane and is surrounded by crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and untouched national parks; a natural wonderland waiting to be explored!
With over 75 tours and activities on offer, this island resort is a perfect destination for guests seeking an action packed, educational, nature based or relaxing experience.
The unforgettable experience of hand feeding a pod of wild bottlenose dolphins that visit Tangalooma each evening is by far the favorite activity of our overnight resort guests.
Day 5 Moreton Island to Daintree Rainforest
Board your launch vessel back to the mainland where you will be met and trabefrred to Brisbane Airport by private vehicle for your onward flight to Cairns. On arrival, you will be transferred to the Daintree Rainforest.
Day 6 Australian Wilderness Safari
Head to the Daintree River where much of the rainforests have remained undisturbed since they evolved 130 million years ago. The rainforest droops down over the river - wildlife and birdlife abound here. You cross the river by cable ferry and continue the drive to beautiful Cape Tribulation Beach.
Lunch is a small site next to a billabong. Remember to bring your togs (swimsuit) as you have a chance to swim at a local billabong.
Day 7 At leisure, Daintree Rainforest
Named in 1770 by Captain Cook, for the trouble he ran into before grounding his ship on a nearby reef, Cape Tribulation is anything but that for visitors today. The experience now is incomparable relaxation. A genuinely delightful holiday is in store for you. You can bushwalk, horse-ride, kayak, snorkel, fish in the estuaries or simply let go in one of Australia's most beautiful settings.
The dense rainforest reaches all the way down to the coast from rugged mountains rising in the west, with ancient, exotic plant life bordering the waterfalls and clear jungle streams. The area is home to some of the oldest species of ferns, including the renowned Angiopteris, the largest in the world.
Day 8 Daintree Rainforest to Cairns
Transfer to Cairns.
The heart of the tropical north, Cairns offers great access to reef and islands and is a perfect base for exploring the wider region. With 600 day tours departing the city daily there is plenty to do.
Day 9 Great Barrier Reef Tour
A trip to the Tropical North would not be complete without experiencing the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Day trips operate from Cairns and Port Douglas with transfers available from Palm Cove and surrounds. Depending on departure city, vessel options include sailing catamarans from Cairns to large catamarans that leave from Port Douglas that have their own platforms on the outer reef.
Day 10 Railway, Kuranda, Skyrail and Tjapukai
You will be transferred to Freshwater Railway station to meet your host who will run through the days schedule. Once on board the train, sit back to enjoy the scenic journey through tunnels and past waterfalls to Kuranda.
On arrival, you are taken to Birdworld (optional extra cost), followed by some leisure time to explore the village & markets before meeting your host back at the Skyrail Terminal. Marvel at the spectacular views as you glide silently above the rainforest canopy. There are two stations en route where you can alight to walk through the rainforest to scenic lookouts.
Skyrail ends at Caravonica Lakes where we have a buffet lunch at the Boomerang Restaurant. Next, enter the Tjapakai Aboriginal Cultural Centre – you will be personally escorted by an Indigenous guide during your time at Tjapukai. There are stage shows, movie theatres, craft demonstrations and an Aboriginal Village – to mention just a few of the attractions that provide an insight into Aboriginal culture and history. Meet with your host again at around 4.00pm for your return to your accommodation.
Please note, a fuel levy of A$2 per person will apply – this will be collected by Downunder Tours on the day of your excursion.
Day 11 Hartley's Crocodile Adventure
Take a half day tour at Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures – the best place to see crocodiles in Tropical North Queensland. Hartley’s Creek is one of the longest established wildlife attractions in Tropical North Queensland, as well as being a working crocodile farm producing skins and meat for export and domestic consumption. It is one of the first places in Australia to hold crocodile shows and is renowned for presenting ‘the Best Crocodile Show in Australia’.
Join a unique eco experience on the lagoon cruise through the ecologically significant Melaleuca wetlands; the domain of the saltwater crocodile. Explore the rest of the park with its abundance of wildlife, including water birds, turtles, wallabies and cassowaries. See the notorious head shake and death roll of a huge crocodile at the Crocodile Attack Show and the opportunity to hold a crocodile for a photo (own expense).
Discover the world's most venomous snakes at the Snake Show before the return transfer to your accommodation.
Day 12 Fly Cairns to Los Angeles (Via Brisbane)
Transfer to the airport for your departure flights.
