Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road

Melbourne

Combining cool elegance, glorious architecture and artistic endeavors with a distinctly delicious Australian flavor, Melbourne is Australia’s cultural capital. Its magic can also be experienced in its fine restaurants, a myriad of festivals and international sporting events.

At first glance, Melbourne may resemble any other modern city with its skyline full of concrete and glass. However, if you look a little closer, you'll find the real Melbourne, a city of unique charm. There are the clanging trams (street cars), swanky boutiques, friendly taxi drivers, Australian Rules Football, fickle weather and 'BYO's', by the hundred (restaurants to which you bring your own liquor or wine). Add to this, Melbourne's traditional virtues of tree lined boulevards, glorious parks, elegant buildings and imposing Victorian Banks and Churches, and of course the giant Melbourne Cricket Ground and you'll have some idea of the city.

Lorne

Known back in the timber-cutting days of the 1850s as the squatters’ Riviera, Lorne has lost none of its allure with the passing years. The approaches to the modern resort town along the Great Ocean Road are spectacular. Blessed with a mild climate and the backdrop of the heavily wooded Otway Ranges, the oceanside town is certainly one of Victoria’s most attractive resort towns.

Soak up the natural attractions of swimming off fine beaches, surfing, fishing or taking a leisurely stroll along the Shipwreck Walk. The coast-hugging Angahook-Lorne State Park, which extends back into the ranges, provides a captivating mix of secluded coves and bays and bushclad valleys and ridges laced with walking trails that lead to stunning waterfalls and tranquil picnic areas.

Port Fairy

Discover history in every corner of this charming old fishing village. Wide streets are lined by nineteenth century cottages, great Norfolk pines, old stone churches, boarding houses and inns. Many fine examples of architecture of the 1800s remain intact.

Follow one of the town’s historic walking trails and discover charming, fully restored white washed cottages built by whalers and seamen beside Georgian-style merchants’ homes and grand public buildings.

At the local port, one of the busiest fishing ports in Victoria, fishermen unload their catch of crayfish and abalone at the dockside, cruising boats and racing yachts dock and anglers try their luck.

There’s also a range of boutique, antique, art and craft shops to peruse, local artists to see at work and museums to explore. Or you can relax and enjoy the fine food and wine on offer at one of the many great pubs, cafés and restaurants in town.
